Capsule Filling
Colorcon recently introduced an inert, free flowing, low dust excipient, StarCap 1500® Co-Processed Starch Excupient, which is designed specifically for capsule filling. StarCap 1500 offers disintegration and dissolution properties that are independent of media pH which can provide scientists with less complex formulations, low capsule weight variation and ultimately lower overall costs.
Direct Compression
Colorcon offers a number of directly compressible excipients such as Starch 1500® Pregelatinized Maize Starch, StarCap1500® Co-Processed Starch Excipient, Cal-Carb® Directly Compressible Calcium Carbonate, and Nu-Tab® Directly Compressible Sugar. All perform key functions in direct compaction formulations as a binder, disintegrant, flow-aid and self-lubricant. Additionally, METHOCEL™ Premium Cellulose Ethers, ETHOCEL™Premium Ethylcellulose Polymers, and POLYOX™ Water Soluble Resins can be utilized in immediate or modified release, direct compression formulations to adjust release rate.
Wet Granulation
Wet granulation is commonly used when it is necessary to enhance the flow and compressibility of a formulation prior to the tableting process. Colorcon can assist with technical recommendations for the wet granulation of formulations containing controlled/extended release polymers, or can provide products which add value as a disintegrant and/or binder in this process. For example, a partially pregelatinized starch, Starch 1500 has a mixture of properties of both native and fully gelatinized starches which makes it an effective alternative to native corn starch or polymers for wet granulations. Useful as both a binder and disintegrant, Starch 1500 can be dry-blended with other ingredients before adding water, or a portion can be dispersed in cold water, thus promoting process flexibility. Additionally, METHOCEL™ LV can be utilized as a binder in both aqueous and solvent applications to produce hard tablets with low friability.
Film Coatings
Colorcon understands the importance of core design, coating formulation, and coating process parameters on the quality of a film coated tablet. Our technical service representatives have more expertise in solid dose tablet manufacturing than anyone else.
Our range of aqueous and organic film coating products includes coatings for immediate release and modified release applications. We also offer both pigmented and non-pigmented film coating systems along with customized colors and color matching.
Roller Compaction
For applications in which it is necessary to improve flow for a formulation that is either difficult to wet granulate or where the active pharmaceutical ingredient is moisture sensitive, Colorcon can provide guidance in the use of METHOCEL™, POLYOX™, Starch 1500 or StarCap1500 in the roller compaction process. Using Starch 1500 or StarCap1500 is an excellent way to reduce solid dose manufacturing process time and cost while preserving optimal properties in a well constructed formulation.
