The efficacy of a drug mixture can be dependant on the rate at which the tablet or capsule disintegrates in the patient’s gastrointestinal tract. For all solid oral dosages, disintegrants may be added to a drug formulation as functional fillers. These excipients assist in the disintegration of the capsule or tablet when it is introduced to moisture.
Disintegrants from Colorcon®
Functional starch excipients from Colorcon bring multi-functional benefits to tablets and capsule formulations through binding capability, improved disintegration properties, and enhanced flow and lubricity.
Starch 1500® partially pregelatinized maize starch performs the actions of two disintegrants; maize starch and free amylose. In some applications, 2% to 10% of Starch 1500 aids in the disintegration of a tablet or capsule as effectively as super disintegrants, greatly reducing costs and improving stability and film coating quality. Although the use of superdisintegrants may be necessary in some formulations, the inclusion of Starch 1500 may allow for a reduction in superdisintegrant levels while avoiding potential stability problems.
StarCap 1500® co-processed starch excipient is a unique co-processed mixture of globally accepted excipients designed for use in capsules and tablets. StarCap 1500 is an inert free flowing, low dust excipient which exhibits good physical, chemical, and microbiological stability. At high (>75%) usage levels of StarCap 1500 in a formulation, disintegration time and drug dissolution rate are independent of media pH leading to consistent drug release profiles in-vivo. StarCap 1500 provides excellent disintegration functionality in formulations due to its low gelatinization levels.
