Taste Masking

When developing a solid oral dosage form, factors such as appearance, taste, and aroma are important considerations. These properties can influence consumer preference and compliance for the dosage regimen, mainly in the case of high dose, poorly tasting drugs.

Water soluble film coatings can improve the appearance of a tablet, but taste masking has presented technical challenges. Typically, high levels of non water soluble coatings have been used, but this can add significant costs. In addition drug dissolution rates or bioavailability can be negatively affected.

Colorcon® offers several solutions to help with taste masking of drugs, along with technical expertise to assist with your challenging formulation.

Our Products

Opadry® tm Taste Mask Film Coating System has been shown to mask the taste of several pharmaceutical active ingredients with no effect on release profiles of the drug.

Opadry® II 85 Series PVA – Based, High Productivity Film Coatings has proven to disguise the taste of several pharmaceutical active ingredients and dietary supplements. Elevated film thickness or weight gain of the Opadry II 85 Series will reduce the detection of bitter ingredients, speed production scale coating processes and have no effect on release profiles of the drug

Surelease ® Aqueous Ethylcellulose Dispersions are a platform of complete optimally plasticized dispersions designed specifically for modified release and taste masking applications.

ETHOCEL ™ Premium Ethylcellulose Polymers are commonly used to micro-encapsulate pharmaceutical actives for sustained release and taste masking applications.
